Our Ongoing Work in Lebanon

Lebanon has endured multiple crises over the years, ranging from civil wars and foreign occupations to the refugee influx driven by the Syrian civil war. The country continues to face the long-term effects of epidemics, the devastating Beirut port explosion in 2020, financial collapse on top of chronic economic challenges and most recently, the spillover of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The collapse of essential social services, exacerbated by widespread corruption and governmental neglect, has created an unprecedented humanitarian crisis, leaving over 1.4 million people in urgent need of assistance (2024). The severity of the crisis is evident in disruption of access to basic necessities, such as food, water, shelter, protection, electricity, livelihoods and medicine.

Two times In 2024, in May and July, Commit Global’s team of researchers and UX designers, led once by our founder, Bogdan Ivanel, and once by our co-founder and Director of Product, Olivia Vereha, conducted an extensive field research mission in Lebanon and Jordan, engaging directly with a total of 11 different CSOs and 9 international non-governmental organizations (INGOs). The research included qualitative interviews, over 40 meetings consisting of semi-structured interviews, discovery sessions and presentations (demos), and on-site assessments to gather a nuanced understanding of the current political, economic, and social environments. This approach allowed us to identify the specific challenges and needs faced by CSOs in both countries, giving us a possibility to produce internal research reports that are grounded in local realities.

Based on the field research analysis, Commit Global is working on the ground with local and international organizations in the areas of lifesaving assistance, youth response, gender-based violence and capacity-building. It recognizes an urgent need to address the alarming levels of food insecurity, a healthcare system on the brink of collapse, and poverty trap by bringing its years of expertise in tech for social good. The Lebanon response focuses on equipping affected communities and humanitarian organizations with the right tools and knowledge to cope with immediate challenges on a day-to-day basis, as well as shifting the paradigm to designing sustainable humanitarian interventions.

Food Security

Lebanon has been grappling with a severe economic and financial crisis since 2019, which has been described as one of the worst globally since the mid-19th century. The Lebanese currency has lost over 90% of its value, causing inflation to skyrocket and making basic necessities, including food, unaffordable for many households. Estimates suggest there are around 2.5 million people in need of food assistance in Lebanon (WFP, 2024).

In this context, Nusaned strives to rebuild lives and create long-term, self-sustaining solutions. As a Lebanese NGO dedicated to community development and disaster relief, their programs emphasize improving access to sufficient and diverse foods, supporting local-economy and promoting health. Commit Global is partnering with Nusaned to transform the data management experience around voucher distribution schemes. The food vouchers that circulate between field workers, small business owners and targeted communities will be securely stored and managed in a digital system. This system will help to verify expiry date and usage, check storage, ensure alignment with food safety rules, communicate the data and transform these to meaningful policies that would inform future operations.

The partnership between Commit Global and Nusaned’s Food and Non-Food Voucher program involves:

  1. Operations Management: Developing a transparent system to streamline tracking and monitoring processes

  3. Supporting Humanitarian Ecosystem: Establishing a robust framework to enhance coordination among stakeholders, contributing to a more resilient ecosystem across Lebanon.

Healthcare Operations

Lebanon faces significant challenges in ensuring equitable access to essential medicines and medical supplies, particularly in underserved and remote areas. Many hospitals face significant difficulties in securing necessary medical supplies and equipment and operate with shortage of staff. Commit Global recognizes an urgent need to deploy solutions that restore access to adequate specialized and preventive care.

The pharmaceutical distribution system in development will create a centralized data management system, leading to greater transparency and accountability and raising awareness and trust in healthcare. The tool will automate inventory management and distribution processes that speed up operations and offer enhanced tracking and monitoring of medical supply chains. In partnership with Anera (American Near East Refugee Aid), an NGO with programs spanning education, healthcare, and economic development in the Middle East, Commit Global will ensure that the system collects and manages data about patient ID, gender, age, nationality, medication, medical conditions, expiry date and quantity in stock. This will translate to improved coordination and communication among stakeholders and evidence-based decision making on a strategic level.

Commit Global is also planning to join forces with the The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), a government entity responsible for developing and implementing national health policies, regulations and services, and WHO, a specialized agency of the United Nations providing technical expertise and supporting countries in developing sustainable health systems. These partnerships will mark a mobilization of efforts to build capacity in secondary care, case management, general sanitary education and population preparedness — areas that have been identified in urgent need of attention during Commit Global’s field research in Lebanon.
